Today was the Big Move from University Ave to E Dayton. I worked from 5A-10:30A, getting off 1/2 hour early so I could get more done before Linda and Rollie were able to meet me. I got a taste of the "great" weather to go while at work, when it quickly started to rain and held steady for good 20 minutes. And it was cold.
The moving of items I think went really well. We loaded up two cars and two trucks and got it all over to the new place in one piece...for the most part. We quickly unloaded everything and set up the futon/twin bunk bed I got from a girl via Facebook. The top will be used for storage and the bottom for watching TV. Linda's a real pro at putting these things together and for that I'm very grateful. Despite the cold rain that constantly pelted us, the job got done and burgers were our reward.
After everyone left and I took a quick detour for TP and my red bag, I went back to the new apartment. It took 4-5 hours to get the place in livable condition, half of the bathroom clean, and the computer working well (ok, so I put the family calendar up and the computer wired before I moved anything else). I've also gotten some of the kitty items in place, like the litter box (not yet filled, but soon) and the scratching post. Looking around, I really don't have a ton of room and should be filling boxes of things I don't need/want for donation (the ones I moved myself, not those my family brought today, of course). All and all, I'm happy with the place. The girl next door must be moving things too because she keeps hitting the wall. Hopefully she'll quit so I can get some sleep.
And as for hiring "professional movers" as Linda suggests...I must say that I do every time I move. For to be a professional, you need experience. And Mom, Matt, Linda and the girls all are highly qualified (and recommended too) :)
Sending a big ol' "THANK YOU!!!!!!!" out to Rollie, the very nice co-worker who made everything sooooooooo much faster, to Linda and the girls for the hard work and bright smiles, to Matt "the cable guy", who didn't actually hook up the cable. That's ok, you tried and got it further than I would've by myself. And you moved lots. So thank you, Mateo! Of course I will not forget Mom, who will, for the first time, get out of cleaning up my former apartment. You've earned this reward (especially after dusting the fan!!), thank you!
I'm so excited...I really want this place all ready for Lily Megan when she comes home on Saturday. The scratching post and litter box are just little reminders that she really is coming...yay!!!!!! Hugs, Christi
P.S. the place no longer reeks of smoke (although there is a lingering scent in the curtains which must be washed soon. They ripped out the carpet yesterday and I spent most of last night mopping the floor (oh the dirt!) and pulling out the staples in the floor with a pair of pliers. My hand is finally recovering, but I'm constantly finding more staples. Thank goodness for throw rugs!

Hello Becky!
Today was an interesting day. I had the car overnight so I could load it and it was full to the gills. Didn't hamper my turning and backing up abilities and for that I'm very grateful. I worked from 5AM to 1:30PM and at one point was doing three people's jobs simultaneously. The civil service workers in RHC had to go to a meeting and they were ALL gone. So I had to get Cold Foods (which does a lot of the catering food) moving on my catering lunch since Tracey had gone to the meeting. I also had to be Rollie the caterer, getting all the stuff together for lunch. And I had to be Jesse the dock guy as I checked in products. I should totally have gotten paid three wages for about two hours today!! All went well, the event was on time even though we left late, and I got out on time.
I paid the rent and picked up the keys to my new place. I had seen the apartment above mine as it was empty at the time. It's...small. 15x13 foot room with a closet-sized bathroom (and full tub) and two outside doors. As I hadn't seen the apartment until today, I was dismayed to find out that the previous inhabitant was a guy...as I could tell just from the disgusting state of the toilet. I also found out that he smoked like a chimney and he'd lived there three years...no wonder the place reeks of smoke. The carpet is stained and disgusting (they are either going to shampoo them or pull them up because there are hardwood floors underneath), the walls must be repainted, the tub needs a good long scrubbing and I'm going to ask for some better lighting in the bathroom and better windows. I called the apartment company and one of their cleaning crews dropped by about twenty minutes later to inspect and do what they could. They made their report, I called the office to make requests for repairs immediately, and I've got to drop off "official" reports tomorrow.
Until the carpet and walls are finished I can't really get massive moving done. The stuff I did bring is in the bathtub and closet and is mostly books and dress clothes so it is ok to not have them...except that I'm going to have to find clothes for tomorrow for my last day in my internship. I'll have to continue to bring things in, just probably not as much as I want to. Hopefully I'll be able to get enough in come Friday that Saturday will be a breeze.
On the way back from my car-emptying, eye-opening experience I pulled over at James Madison Park on E. Gorham and ran into Becky Y., my friend from College for Kids at UW-Platteville (waaaay back in Darlington days). We got to talking, we ran to the Post Office to mail Alissa's sweatshirt, and went to dinner at a Chinese buffet with a banana split for dessert at Ella's Deli. I got to go to her house to pet her cats Butterfinger and Reeses (Pieces) who love to cuddle and have tummy rubs. We are about 4 blocks apart so we are planning on visiting often. Then I went to DoIT to get a cheap clock radio from a girl I met via Facebook.
As for the guy I mentioned a few days ago, I am happy to call him friend and hold out hope that we will remain that way even after catering.
Well, I'm pooped. I'm going to put some pictures of the apartment (as it is now) on Facebook (see right hand side of this blog to look at pictures) and then probably just head to bed. I'll get more done in the morning. Hopefully tomorrow I'll also hear about Megan the kitty. Hugs, Christi

The First Load of Moving
Today was starting out to be a crummy day. Couldn't figure out this charge on my card, don't have health insurance, going to be late for work. Thankfully it got better. I got a call from the Iowa County Humane Society checking up on my references (good good). I got a call from the insurance company saying I could get back coverage so I'm covered if anything happens. My iPod is currently working (the calendar application hasn't for over two months). I got a movie on the first day it was out at Blockbuster. And I got my first load of moving stuff packed and ready to go. Not too bad for a Tuesday. Must get going, must get up and at work at 5AM. I'll take my full car there. Then I get to moving. Rollie's got the pieces to my "new" futon/bunk bed I got from a girl on Facebook so I've got to get them from him after I get my keys. Thursday and Friday I'll be moving more loads in between work and internship. Hopefully I'll have enough moved that Saturday with the family won't be too taxing on everyone. Well, still awake when I shouldn't be. Hugs, Christi

RIP Oliver Sushi Fishavan

My dear sweet little fishy died sometime last night. He had been sick for a few days now, and although I made an emergency run to the store on Friday to get medication and a new bowl, in the end it didn't help. He was getting better but I guess never fully recovered. Matt's going to come over to help me take care of him. I am so grateful to Laura and her mom for picking me up on Friday and taking me to the store. It meant that I had a few more days with him. I hope that he's happy and healthy and has all of his tail now in fishy heaven. Thank you Ollie for all of the good times and for sticking through all of the bad ones. You are my little hero and dear sweet friend. Hugs and lots of love, Christi
